Gluing this would not fix it though, since there would be no way to get as strong a bond as before, and that wasn't enough strength in the first place. So I drilled a hole into both sections.
I cut the head and tip off a 16D steel nail. This will be our reinforcement so it does not break again. If it does break after this we are using the scraper incorrectly.
The parts fit together with the reinforcement rod in place. The trick now is to fill the empty space between the holes and the rod space with an epoxy-type material. I rooted around in my adhesive bin and found some jb-weld.
JB-weld is a two-part epoxy with some sort of reinforcing filler. It is very strong. I mixed these two little beads until it was a uniform grey color. Then I applied it to the nail and assembled the parts.
Then I clamped the scraper in the vice in such a way that it also pressed onto the table, holding the two sections together while the jb-weld cured overnight.
Nice and solid now.
